Project: homemade fan
Materials
Cardboard
Cutter
Scissors
Glue gun
3-way switch
9-volt battery
Wire
Screw cap
Soldering iron
Instructions
1. The Strong Base:
* Take two pieces of cardboard that are 15 centimeters by 15 centimeters (about the size of a small square plate).
* Glue one piece on top of the other. This will be the base of our project!
2. The Box Edges:
* Now, cut out four strips of cardboard that are 15 centimeters long and 2 centimeters wide (like small rulers).
* Glue these four strips to the edges of the cardboard square we made. Glue them so they form a little box, but without a bottom!
3. The Switch Hole:
* On the top of the cardboard square (the one without the open box), carefully make a small hole using a craft knife (ask a grown-up for help!). The hole should be the size of the switch you're going to use. Make this hole near one of the edges.
* Push the switch through this hole until it fits nicely. Make sure the wires of the switch are pointing down, inside the box.
4. The Battery's Spot:
* Glue the 9-volt battery to the bottom of the cardboard square, inside the box we made with the strips.
5. Another Hole for Wires:
* Make another hole in the cardboard square, near one of the edges and on the side opposite where you put the switch. This hole will be for the motor's wires.
6. The Motor Holder:
* Roll up a piece of cardboard that is 25 centimeters by 20 centimeters to make a tube or a frame. Leave some empty space in the middle of the roll.
* Glue this roll together with silicone glue so it doesn't unroll and stays firm.
7. Putting the Motor In:
* Make a small diagonal cut on one edge of the cardboard tube.
* Thread the motor's wires from one side of the tube to the other, through the cut you made.
* Glue the motor to the cardboard tube with silicone glue.
8. Connecting the Motor to the Base:
* Glue the tube with the motor onto the cardboard base, right over the hole we made for the wires. Glue the side of the tube that's opposite where the motor is.
9. The Fan Blades:
* Cut out three pieces of cardboard in the shape of fan blades. You can make them any shape you like!
* Glue these three fan blades onto a screw-on bottle cap.
* In the middle of the bottle cap, make a small hole so the little stick on the motor (the shaft) can go through it.
10. Connecting the Wires (Grown-up Help Needed!):
* Important: A grown-up should do this part carefully!
* Solder (stick together with hot, melted metal using a soldering iron) one of the wires from the switch to one of the ends of the battery connector (where the battery wire goes).
* Solder a wire from the middle part of the switch to one of the motor's wires.
* Solder the remaining wire from the battery connector to the remaining wire of the motor.
All done! Now, when you move the switch, the electricity should flow and make the motor spin the fan blades. Remember to always ask a grown-up for help when using tools like the craft knife or when soldering!
